North America’s drinks industry saw a rise of 11.6% in overall deal activity during Q1 2020, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 77 deals worth $5.34bn were announced for the region during Q1 2020, against the last four-quarter average of 69 deals.

Of all the deal types, venture financing saw most activity in Q1 2020 with 41, representing a 53.3% share for the region.

In second place was M&A with 30 deals, followed by private equity deals with six transactions, respectively capturing a 39% and 7.8% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading category in North America’s drinks industry with $5.21bn, followed by venture financing deals totalled $125.15m.

The top five drinks deals accounted for 98.1% of the overall value during Q1 2020.

The combined value of the top five drinks deals stood at $5.24bn, against the overall value of $5.34bn recorded for the quarter.

1) PepsiCo’s $3.85bn acquisition of Rockstar

2) The $957.82m acquisition of Primo Water by Cott

3) WESTROCK COFFEE’s $405m acquisition of S&D Coffee

4) The $17.5m venture financing of Athletic Brewing Co by Blake Mycoskie, Tastemaker Capital Partners and Wheelhouse Partners

5) AccelFoods’s venture financing of Proud Source Water for $6m.
