Rémy Cointreau Group has signed an agreement to acquire the assets of US-based single malt whiskey maker, Westland Distillery.

Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Westland Distillery produces spirits such as American Single Malt Whiskey, Peated Malt and Sherry Wood.

"Rémy Cointreau plans to further expand its portfolio in the single malt whisky category."

The distillery intends to drive the category of single malt whiskey forward by using new varietals of barley and oak, with diverse concepts such as terroir, and championing distinctiveness.

With this acquisition, Rémy Cointreau plans to further expand its portfolio in the single malt whisky category.

The transaction is due to close before the end of the year.

Rémy Cointreau Group manufactures wines and spirits and recorded sales of €1.05bn for the year ending 31 March, 2016. It employs around 1,800 people.

The company's brands include Rémy Martin and Louis XIII cognacs, the Cointreau liqueur and the Metaxa, Mount Gay, St-Rémy, Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte, Octomore, and The Botanist spirits.
