Vintage Wine Estates has acquired a majority interest in Napa Valley-based Splinter Group Spirits for an undisclosed amount.

Splinter was formed in 2013 by the Wilkinson Family and Dave Phinney.

It produces limited-production brands such as Straight Edge bourbon whiskey and Slaughter House American whiskey.

"The winemaker voice is essential to the authenticity of these brands."

The whiskies are finished in French oak wine barrels previously used for aging Bordeaux varietal red wines.

Well known winemakers and whiskey aficionados Steve Matthiasson and Bob Cabral have signed on to the new team.

Both Matthiasson and Cabral will expand Splinter's offerings in the near future.

Vintage Wine Estates president and CEO Pat Roney said: "The winemaker voice is essential to the authenticity of these brands.

"We are thrilled to have two of the industry's most distinguished winemakers join the project."

Upon selling interest in Splinter Group, Phinney intends to focus on Orin Swift Cellars and other projects.
