Major Brands, a distributor of wines and spirits, has acquired American wine distributor Garco Wine for an undisclosed amount.

The move forms a part of the company’s strategy to rebuild its portfolio after some suppliers including Diageo, Bacardi and Luxco have moved from it this year, following a dispute over distributor franchise rights in Missouri.

Commenting on the transaction, Major Brands CEO Susan McCollum was quoted by St. Louis Post Dispatch as saying that like Major Brands, Garco is a third generation Missouri company and by combining, they become stronger.

"Adding Garco, which distributes brands including Opus One and Robert Mondavi, will boost Major Brands’ fine wine sales by 15 percent next year.

"We’re looking for opportunities to rebuild our business," added McCollum.

The sale transaction is scheduled for completion in early 2014.

Garco Wine’s president Michael Cohen has been appointed as sales director of the new business development for Major Brands.

In a related development, Pernod Ricard USA has named Major Brands as its exclusive distributor for Missouri.

Founded in 1934 Major Brands distributes spirits, wine, and beer.

The company sells and distributes consumer beverage alcohol to grocery stores, restaurants, and other retail outlets in Missouri.
