US-based food company General Mills plans to launch seven Yoplait yogurts made from sheep and goat milk in France.

The yogurts will be rolled out at retail stores later this month.

It is the first time that the company had launched yogurts made from sheep and goat milk.

“We saw an opportunity, as yogurt made with goat and sheep milk is both good for health and makes consumers discover new tastes.”

The company began working on the product line, called Yoplait C’est bon de varier, last November.

General Mills France marketing manager Marc-Antoine Olive said: “We saw an opportunity, as yogurt made with goat and sheep milk is both good for health and makes consumers discover new tastes.

“It also has been driving growth in the fresh dairy product market. Consumers are more and more interested in these products.”

Yogurt made from goat milk comes with strong taste while that of sheep milk is sweet and has mild taste.

According to General Mills, the alternative dairy industry is small, but it is growing at a rapid pace.

Citing a market research, General Mills said that the alternative dairy segment represents about 8% of the fresh dairy products sold in France.

The alternative dairy segment also includes products made with organic and soy ingredients.

Yoplait C’est bon de varier offers yogurt from sheep milk in plain, blueberry, cherry and fig flavours while that of goat milk comes in plain, blueberry and cherry flavours.
