The country has around 30 brewing museums. Some of its national dishes also include beer.

The application to Unesco was submitted by the German-speaking region of Belgium.

Belgian beer has become the country’s 13th item to be included in Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, which also includes horse-drawn shrimp fishing, and the carnival in the town of Aalst.

This list has also seen the addition of Cuban rumba and the Mangal Shobhajatra festival in Bangladesh this year.

In 2015, Arabic coffee and the bagpipe culture of Slovakia featured in the list.

States are obliged to safeguard listed traditions and can seek financial aid todo so.

In 2008, the United Nations created the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage for traditional events, rituals and social practices.

In order to qualify, it is required for the tradition to be passed down through generations and should instill a sense of identity.
