The Lake Zurich village board has adopted an amendment to its zoning code and a special use permit under which it will allow Copper Fiddle to open its whisky distillery in Lake Zurich, Illinois.

The distillery, which is set to open in fall 2013, will mainly concentrate on the production of whiskies.

Copper Fiddle Distillery co-owner Jose Hernandez said when open, the distillery would be the ninth in Illinois and second in Lake County.

Proposed to be built on a site at 532 W Route 22 in Lake Zurich village, Illinois, the distillery will offer tours and tastings of its spirits on-site, besides selling the spirits.

The distillery further plans to make gin and other specialty liquors and also sell specialty barware and accessories.

Copper Fiddle Distillery co-owner Fred Robinson said the distillery still needs to get federal and state permits.

"We’re looking at maybe early fall," Robinson added.

According to the new zoning code adopted by Lake Zurich village, any distillery in the village will be able to manufacture beverages but not malt based beverages.

Moreover, the distillery will not be able to offer regular bar-type services, but can sell the packaged product and offer small taste samples.

With the opening of the craft distillery, the village expects to attract craft brewers to the area.
