C&C Group has purchased 50% equity stake in Wallaces Express, a Scotland-based independent wines and spirits wholesaler, for an undisclosed amount.

The move will allow Wallaces to offer enhanced service and increased value for the on-trade market across Scotland.

Established in 1875, Wallaces Express has six distribution centres in Irvine, Coatbridge, Dumfries, Lanark, Kintore and Inverness, and serves as a complete supplier to the licensed on-trade, including wines and spirits, soft drinks, packaged, draught beer, glassware and snacks.

Wallaces Express will continue to run independently and will work along with C&C Group to offer its existing customers and expand its complete portfolio to the Scottish on-trade markets.

C&C Group group chief financial officer Kenny Neison said the acquisition is part of the company’s aim to develop a platform in the Scotland drinks market.

"Whilst Wallaces Express will be run independently from our beer business, we will seek opportunities to take advantage of cross-selling for customers, particularly in wines and spirits," Neison added.

"This partnership between two great drinks businesses will provide our customers with a one stop shop for all their alcoholic and soft drinks needs."

Wallaces Express managing director Brian Calder said, "In terms of strategic aims and culture, the two businesses are well aligned and I am confident that both businesses will continue to move forward to the benefit of the Scottish licensed trade."
