The Distillery of Modern Art (DOMA), a new craft distillery in Atlanta, Georgia, US, was opened in January 2021. It is the first and only distillery in the Chamblee metro area of Atlanta.

The DOMA houses a production area, retail and exhibition space with a tasting room and bar, and a space for hosting private events.

The distillery combines the world of spirits with contemporary art, and acts as a backdrop to a modern event space for special occasions.

Inspired by the lively and modern community of Atlanta, the distillery will initially offer gin and vodka. A range of American whiskeys and distinctive liqueurs are planned to be included in the future.

Each spirit offered by the distillery indicates its own artwork created in the individual artist’s style.

DOMA distillery location

The DOMA is situated at 2197 Irvindale Way near the Chamblee MARTA station in DeKalb County, Atlanta, Georgia, US. The property is fully ADA-compliant and handicap-accessible.

Distillery of Modern Art design details

The Distillery of Modern Art has been created by converting a 15,000ft² office and warehouse into a craft distillery featuring modern art.

The contemporary architecture and transformative nature of the building changes its appearance from day to night.

“The distillery tour provides a fully immersive experience to the visitors by providing a glance into DOMA’s philosophy and process.”

The distillery is designed to provide an immersive experience and each area is carefully designed with an intended purpose. The classic distillery and modern gallery of DOMA offers a noteworthy experience to guests.

The entryway of the distillery appears unadorned and modern while the entire space is divided into separate sections for the bar, stills and event spaces to provide an exploratory approach to the visitors.

The shared bar within the distillery features tables, a bar and walls made from wood and whiskey barrels. The functional distillery is beyond the bar and situated alongside a space for events.

The event space acts as a blank canvas with a large window looking back into the barrel storage area. The highly transformative space features concrete floors and unique shape pattern lighting to serve as a wedding reception venue, as well as a concert hall.

The distillery tour provides a fully immersive experience to the visitors by providing a glance into DOMA’s philosophy and process, thus imparting a deeper understanding of the practice of craft distilling.

The facility also celebrates its crafted spirits by organising engaging events every month for friends and co-workers.

DOMA facilities

The open and private event space within DOMA is situated at the rear portion of the distillery. It is designed to transform from a live distillery worksite to a private event space.

The event space can accommodate up to 175 seated guests or 350 standing guests. The entire venue of the distillery can also be rented, bringing the standing room capacity to more than 400. A full prep kitchen is also available for event catering inside the distillery.

The DOMA houses a Detroit Stillworks Hot Rod machine, which can heat up to running temperature within five minutes. A continuous still system by Vendome Copper & Brass Works operates continuously for producing portable alcohol.

The distillery has onsite and nearby parking facilities for hosting all kinds of events.

Contractors involved

The DOMA was designed by Georgia-based architecture and interior design firm Vickers Design Group.

Thoroughbred provided support for a range of services such as concept ideation, financial modelling, distillery and equipment engineering, brand and packaging design, and market introduction strategy.

The DOMA collaborated with several local artists to produce art pieces inspired by the spirits.

Trevelino / Keller, an Atlanta-based digital public relations and marketing firm, was selected to provide public relations, digital marketing and creative services.

Marketing commentary

The Distillery of Modern Art was founded by Seth Watson in a bid to deliver a full sensory experience by incorporating an artistic expression into every facet of the brand. It was evolved from Seth’s background in visual arts combined with an all-around aim to create a unique spirits experience.

The brand is conceptualised from meticulous consideration of each aspect, starting from the brand imagery to curated artwork, and the distillery design.
