US-based Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries has expanded its portfolio in the US with the launch of BLY Silver Rum.

Officially listed by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, BLY Silver Rum has been rolled across stores in Pennsylvania state.

The molasses-based rum is also now available in California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland and Washington, DC.

Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries is planning to launch BLY Silver Rum in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York next month.

Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries master distiller Barry Young said: “As with Boyd & Blair, I wanted to create a spirit that did not taste like every other product in the category, but still tasted as if it belonged in the category.

“For BLY it was my goal to push the flavour profile so it had a good amount of flavour, picked up the characteristics of the molasses and was not over distilled.”

“For BLY it was my goal to push the flavour profile so it had a good amount of flavour, picked up the characteristics of the molasses and was not over distilled, which can equal a bland spirit.”

BLY Silver Rum is white rum that has been distilled in single batches from molasses sourced from the Pennsylvania countryside.

Each batch produces nearly 600 bottles, which are filled, corked and labelled by hand to meet the distillery’s standards.

In producing this spirit, the distiller used its mash method, where the molasses are stirred and heated. No automatic is used in the production process.

Young said: “Our process in unconventional and does not cook our mash with the molasses, but instead uses warm water that has been recycled from the cooling process of our still to thin the molasses out. The process is longer, however it yields a more quality spirit.”
