UK-based supermarket chain Tesco has removed certain Heineken beer and cider products from its retail shelves, as the brewer intends to increase the prices of its alcoholic beverages due to the Brexit referendum.

Currently, Tesco is reported to have stocked only 22 of the 53 Heineken brands, removing products such as Amstel, Sol, Tiger, and Kingfisher from its shelves.

Tesco spokesperson was quoted by the Independent.co.uk as saying: “We frequently review our ranges to ensure they meet the needs of customers. We continue to offer customers a great range of beer, lager, and cider.”

The Dutch alcohol company is reported to have taken the decision to hike prices due to pressure from prevailing economic conditions after a 15% fall in the value of pound following the UK’s vote to leave the EU.

"We frequently review our ranges to ensure they meet the needs of customers. We continue to offer customers a great range of beer, lager, and cider."

A Heineken spokesperson was quoted by Independent.co.uk as saying: “We don’t comment on commercial arrangements with our customers. Shoppers will continue to find a broad range of our fantastic beer and cider brands in Tesco.”

Last year, a pricing dispute between the supermarket chain and Unilever was blamed on the drop in pound value. Tesco had then temporarily halted the sale of Unilever products, including Marmite and PG Tips following proposals to increase prices by 10% due to the Brexit vote.

Heineken also had to face pressure from an increase in alcohol taxes in the budget earlier this month.
