Suntory, a Japan-based beverage firm, is reportedly planning to purchase around 20% stake in India-based alcoholic drinks company Radico Khaitan’s liquor unit for over $100m.

The move forms part of the company’s strategy to boost its sales outside Japan and the latest in a series of investments by Suntory.

The transaction is expected to allow Suntory to bolster its presence in the Indian liquor market, as well as benefiting Radico.

Radico Khaitan, which was formerly known as Rampur Distillery, manufactures and sells liquor primarily in India. Its principal products include rectified spirits, country liquor, and Indian made foreign liquor.

Suntory already has a partnership with Radico for distributing its whiskies, including Hibiki blended whisky and Yamazaki single malt.

Suntory has agreed to purchase US-based distilled spirits producer Beam for $16bn during January 2014.

The company manufactures and sells beverage and food products in China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Oceania, the Americas, and Europe. It operates through Beverages and Foods, and Beer and Spirits.
