Beverage can market in the UK has reported the delivery of more than 9.5 billion cans during 2013, an increase of 2.2% compared to the previous year, according to The Can Makers, the body representing the UK beverage can manufacturers.

Beer and cider, and carbonated soft drinks can markets also witnessed growth.

Empty can deliveries have increased by 5% in the beer and cider category to 4.4 billion cans. However, the lager and ale markets were relatively flat.

According to Nielsen data, the market for cider cans has increased by 11%. Market volume for the cider in smaller cans has increased by 8%.

Around 5.1 billion cans in the CSD market were delivered, up marginally on 2012. Driven by energy drinks, 50cl cans market has increased by 21% compared to 2012 in CSD category.

Around 87% of can sales were in multipack format in grocery multiples.

UK Can Makers chairman Graham Fenton said that it shows that the drinks can remains a pack of choice for brewers and soft drink companies, retailers and consumers alike.

"Though the year got off to a cold start, a good British summer has undoubtedly given the market a much-needed lift, bringing more opportunity to enjoy picnics, barbecues and other occasions where drinks in cans are consumed," Fenton added.
