UK-based whisky distiller Bowmore has introduced a new limited edition offering, Black Bowmore 50 Year Old. Only 159 bottles have been released.

The spirit used to produce the Black Bowmore series was distilled in November 1964 at the Bowmore distillery on Islay.

Black Bowmore 50 Year Old is the fifth and final edition of the Black Bowmore series.

"This last cask of Black Bowmore demonstrates the unparalleled depth and quality of our single malts."

Of the previous four releases, the first was in 1993 and the most recent in 2007.

The single malt was matured at Bowmore’s No.1 Vaults in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks.

The drink is reported to include notes of tropical fruit, honeyed black truffle and peat smokiness

Bowmore distillery manager David Turner was quoted by thespiritsbusiness.com as saying: “This last cask of Black Bowmore to be rediscovered not only demonstrates the unparalleled depth and quality of our single malts but cements Bowmore as one of the world’s leading whiskies.”

Black Bowmore 50 Year Old is marketed at a recommended retail price of £16,000.
