US-based walnut and almond processor Mariani Nut Company is entering the plant-based milk category with the launch of its refrigerated Walnutmilk.

Initially, the product will be launched through the company’s regional retail partners in Texas and Northern California.

Mariani Nut Company sales and marketing partner Matt Mariani said: “Our test consumers loved the flavor and creaminess and recognised walnuts as a true super food offering numerous health benefits. We are excited to bring this innovative line of Walnutmilk to the refrigerated dairy case.”

With 50% more calcium and less sugar content, Mariani claims its Walnutmilk is non-GMO product and free from gluten, dairy, soy with no artificial colours, flavours or carrageenan.

“We are excited to bring this innovative line of Walnutmilk to the refrigerated dairy case.”

Mariani Walnutmilk is a lactose-free product and contains only 45 calories per eight ounce serving, which the company says is less than half the calories of 1% fat milk and fewer calories than other plant-based milks.

The product will be available in original, vanilla, unsweetened flavours and in half-gallon cartons. Each carton will be priced between $3.49 and $3.99.

Mariani Nut Company was founded in 1972 by two cousins looking for farming opportunities in California. It is now one of the largest walnut and almond processors in the world with farming operations across several thousands of acres.

Its existing portfolio of products include whole almonds and walnuts, which are distributed in the US and exported worldwide.
