Scotch whisky producer The Macallan has expanded its Edition series with the launch of the fifth bottling in its series, Edition No 5.

The company collaborated with Pantone Color Institute to create the Macallan Edition Purple, a bold and complex shade, which reflects a multi-faceted and intricate combination of colour.

For this edition, Pantone created a new ‘bold’ shade of purple. It is included on the bottle label, as well as on the packaging of the expression.

Pantone Color Institute vice-president Laurie Pressman said: “As the rainbow’s most complex colour, purple naturally felt like the ideal shade to highlight the equally complex process involved in The Macallan’s whisky-making.

“This new vibrant shade developed for Edition No 5, brings to life the exquisite combination of distinctive natural hues found in this whisky.”

With 48.5% alcohol by volume (ABV), The Macallan Edition No 5 offers an aroma of vanilla and toffee with notes of oak, nutmeg and ginger, as well as lemon basil and pear.

Furthermore, to deliver a single malt whisky with a full flavour, the company has hand-picked American oak casks primarily for their colour.

The Macallan whisky maker Sarah Burgess said: “We can find much common ground between whisky making and colour creation and with Edition No 5 we have been able to explore and celebrate these two art forms.

“Whilst colour development starts with mixing basic colours with precision to achieve different shades, for whisky-making, it is the knowledge and understanding of a specific palette of colours from the cask which is the starting point. From here we can craft the desired character and specific colour of the final whisky.”

The expression will be distributed in the US and select global markets from this month, at a suggested retail price (SRP) of $120.

In June, Macallan unveiled single malt whisky Macallan Estate, made from barley from the brand’s Easter Elchies estate.
