Johnnie Walker has expanded its limited-edition Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal series with the addition of a third blend.

The beverage is said to have been produced using stocks from its closed Highland distillery Glenury Royal, a ghost distillery that was closed in 1985.

The facility was founded in 1825 by British Parliament member Captain Robert Barclay, but it was later destroyed in a fire.

Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge said: “Shining a light on this hidden treasure of the whisky world is something we’ve wanted to do for some time.

“This indulgent new limited-edition provides us with a wonderful opportunity to explore the remarkable layers of rich fruit found in every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.”

Diageo’s blending team used rare whiskies from five other closed distilleries including Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie. These whiskies provide vanilla, heather honey and dried fruit tastes, as well as smooth dark chocolate and nutty layers.

The latest blend follows the release of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen and Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora in recent years.

With 43.8% alcohol by volume (ABV), Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal will be available globally from October this year for an RRSP of £275 for a 70cl bottle.

Each bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal in this special release is claimed to have been individually numbered.
