Belgium-based brewery Duvel Moortgat has acquired a 60% stake in UK-based kombucha maker Jarr Kombucha.

Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed by the companies.

Established in 2015, Jarr has been producing and distributing kombucha across various retail outlets in the country, including Planet Organic, Harrods and Selfridges. It is also available at selected health food retailers in the UK.

According to the contract, the investment made by the Belgian brewery will be used by Jarr Kombucha to further enhance its production capacity by establishing a new facility in London.

“We are looking forward to teaming up with them and bringing great kombucha to more people than ever before.”

The deal will also give the UK company access to Duvel Moortgat’s existing distribution network.

Duvel Moortgat CEO Michel Moortgat said: “The way of producing kombucha is very similar to that of beer. It is the result of all natural ingredients brewed to a tasteful drink by highly passionate people; we can now offer our consumers a different yet equally high-quality brewed premium drink.”

Jarr founder Adam Vanni added: “We are hugely excited to be working with Duvel Moortgat. As a family business with a distinct focus on quality, Duvel shares our values and vision for the future.

“We are looking forward to teaming up with them and bringing great kombucha to more people than ever before.”

In September, global beverage firm Coca-Cola entered the kombucha market when it acquired Australian kombucha maker Organic & Raw Trading, which produces the MOJO brand of naturally fermented, live-cultured, organic drinks.
