Alcoholic beverages company Diageo has announced that new voluntary health warning label will feature on its Smirnoff, Gordon’s Pink, Baileys and Captain Morgan brands from early 2021 in the UK.

With this initiative, Diageo has become the first alcohol company in the UK to introduce a voluntary health warning on the packaging of its alcoholic beverage brands.

The company said that the labels are currently in production and will initially appear on Smirnoff’s 70cl as well as on 1l bottles. The labels can also be noticed on 1l bottles of Gordon’s Pink Gin in early 2021.

Diageo’s other brands including Baileys and Captain Morgan will feature the labels followed by all brands in Great Britain with old stocks being replaced.

Additionally, the company updated and relaunched its DRINKiQ website to provide additional information to support and educate people with differing levels of alcohol consumption.

The updated website will provide knowledge and tools to help consumers make informed choices around alcohol.

It will feature a new self-assessment test, based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) ‘AUDIT Tool’, which will help people identify if they are consuming alcohol at harmful levels.

In addition to the self-assessment test, the new website will also feature the DRINKiQ quiz and lifestyle features, with topics including ‘drinking and your body’ and ‘drinking and your mind’.

The company said that the updated website also includes the latest governmental guidance around drinking alcohol, with a focus on mental health, as well as physical health.

Diageo UK managing director Dayalan Nayager said: “As the UK’s leading spirits producer, we think it is essential that our consumers make informed choices about alcohol.

“We want to change the way the world drinks for the better, and today’s initiatives are just the first step forward in our long-term global ambition to reach one billion people with messages of moderation over the next ten years.”

Diageo’s latest announcement follows the launch of ‘Society 2030: Spirit of Progress’, which is the company’s ten-year sustainability action plan.
