UK-based alcoholic beverage company Diageo has announced that some of its canned premixes will be offered with edible straws.

The edible straws are claimed to be sustainably produced and will be available in strawberry, chocolate, lemon and lime flavours to complement each pre-mixed drink.

The company’s latest initiative aims to meet the needs of consumers who are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of products.

“The new edible straw initiative is said to be part of Diageo’s commitment to phase out plastic straws and stirrers worldwide.”

Some of Diageo’s canned premixes to be sold with an edible straw include Pimm’s & Lemonade, which will come with a strawberry-flavoured straw; Gordon’s Gin & Schweppes Tonic, which will feature a lime straw; and Baileys & Iced Coffee Latte, which is paired with a chocolate-flavoured straw.

In addition, Diageo’s Captain Morgan Spiced Rum & Cola will feature a lemon-flavoured straw and Smirnoff & Cranberry will include a lime straw.

The new edible straw initiative is said to be part of Diageo’s commitment to phase out plastic straws and stirrers worldwide, as announced in January this year.

This reflects the brand’s pledge to make its packaging more sustainable. It will be implemented alongside actions such as using recycled content, reducing packaging weight and increasing recyclability.

In June this year, Diageo launched a new plastics targets for 2025, which will see the company only using plastic that is completely recyclable. It also intends to use bottles made out of recycled content by 2030.
