Achaval Ferrer announced that it has acquired the Melipal Winery in Mendoza, Argentina.

Established in 2003, Melipal Winery owns 74 hectares of vineyards in Luján de Cuyo, a winery and a portfolio that includes Melipal and Ikella.

As per the agreement, Achaval Ferrer winery will also acquire the Las Nazarenas Malbec vineyard, which was planted in 1923.

The deal will complement the assets of Achaval Ferrer and enable the company to enter new markets.

Founded in 1998, Achaval Ferrer was acquired by SPI Group in 2011, a wines and spirits organisation that manages more than 380 brands, including Stoli Vodka.

Part of SPI Group’s Tenute Del Mondo wine division, Achaval Ferrer’s current portfolio consists of three tiers of wines, including Fincas, single-vineyard handcrafted variants, Quimera, single-blend wines and the Mendoza line, which features Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

In June 2018, SPI Group completed an acquisition of Louisiana Spirits and its range of Bayou Rums. SPI initially acquired a minority stake in Louisiana Spirits in 2015, which was later increased it to a 72.5% controlling stake in 2016. The handcrafted rum is made from a unique blend of molasses and raw sugar, which is sourced from Louisiana sugarcane.
