The US drinks industry saw a rise of 3.8% in overall deal activity during Q2 2019, when compared with the last four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 55 deals worth $2.62bn were announced in Q2 2019, compared to the last four-quarter average of 53 deals.

Venture financing was the leading category in the quarter with 32 deals which accounted for 58.2% of all deals.

In second place was M&A with 18 deals, followed by private equity with five transactions, respectively accounting for 32.7% and 9.1% of overall deal activity in the country’s drinks industry during the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the US drinks industry with total deals worth $2bn, while private equity and venture financing deals totalled $554.7m and $68.83m, respectively.

The US drinks industry deals in Q2 2019: Top deals

The top five drinks deals accounted for 97.5% of the overall value during Q2 2019.

The combined value of the top five drinks industry deals stood at $2.56bn, against the overall value of $2.62bn recorded for the quarter. The top announced US drinks industry deal tracked by GlobalData in Q2 2019 was E. & J. Gallo Winery’s $1.7bn asset transaction with Constellation Brands.

In second place was the $510m private equity deal with Bolthouse Farms by Butterfly Equity and in third place was The Boston Beer’s $300m acquisition of Dogfish Head Brewery.

The $40m private equity deal with Q Tonic by Eurazeo PME and Cambridge Companies SPG, Dwight Funding and Everplus Capital’s venture financing of LIFEAID Drinks Company for $7.7m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
