PepsiCo has announced plans to cut down calorie count in its beverages by 2025.

The company's chairman and chief executive officer Indra Nooyi has announced this plan as part of a new sustainability initiative.

The company also intends to double its water efficiency across its operations.

"Technology breakthroughs right now are resulting in better-tasting lower-calorie colas."

Nooyi was quoted by CNBC as saying: "Over the last decade, we have made progress in reducing sugar.

"But there's a lot more we needed to do because countries which loved sugar were growing faster than countries which were consuming lower-sugar products."

According to PepsiCo, around two-thirds of its drinks will have 100cal or less per 12oz serving by 2025.

It also intends to focus on zero or lower-calorie products.

Nooyi added: "Technology breakthroughs right now are resulting in better-tasting colas, almost as good as the full-sugar colas, but with lower calories.

"So we're now faced with [an] interesting opportunity to step the consumer down to lower sweetness levels."
