Nespresso has expanded its coffee-sourcing programme into Colombia as part of its $50m investment in sustainable high-quality coffee cultivation in this region.

The programme primarily focuses on regions that have been impacted by conflict, but also areas where production was completely lost.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said: “Colombian coffee is the finest in the world. I welcome Nespresso’s commitment to our country, which highlights the many opportunities that peace opens for Colombia.”

Earlier this year, Nespresso launched limited-edition coffee Aurora de la Paz (Dawn of Peace) that was sourced from the region of Caquetá in Colombia.

“The company’s agronomists have already started working with more than 500 coffee producers in the Caquetá region to implement its AAA Sustainable Quality Programme.”

Nespresso plans to source five times more product from Caquetá, and begin sourcing  from San Vicente del Caguán, a community that was reported to be at the centre of the armed conflict.

Implementation of the programme in San Vicente will be supported by Nespresso’s strategic partner the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC).

The company’s agronomists have already started working with more than 500 coffee producers in the Caquetá region to implement its AAA Sustainable Quality Programme, which focuses on improving their productivity by sharing good practice and providing technical assistance.

Nespresso CEO Jean-Marc Duvoisin said: “Quality coffee and the premiums that farmers can earn, present a very strong opportunity for the long-term sustainability and resilience of coffee farming communities. We are delighted to bring this incredible coffee to the world.”
